Chrysanthemums, sometimes abbreviated to mums or chrysanths, are perennial herbaceous flowering plants in the family Asteraceae that bloom in the autumn. They are native to East Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia, and the centre of diversity is in China. Many thousands of horticultural varieties and cultivars exist.
In Australia, as well as being the signature flower of Autumn, they are also associated very much with Mother's Day, which falls in Autumn (second Sunday in May). No doubt the "Mum" of the abbrevaited flower name lends itself to the association.
