FFF695 - AUTUMN CHRYSANTHEMUMS

The Chrysanthemums in our garden have started blooming this year and that means Autumn is well and truly here. By Mothers' Day all the chrysanthemum varieties will be in their glory and that may explain why in Australia, these flowers are associated with gift-giving to our mothers on their special day. The widespread availability, together with the beauty of the flowers and the way the word chrysantheMUM includes our mum is why they are popular this time of the year!

FFF664 - VALENTINE ROSES

The rose plant belongs to the family Rosaceae and the genus Rosa and contains about 150 species. One of the first recorded instances of roses representing love comes from ancient Greek Mythology. Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was walking  through a rose garden full of white roses. Eros, her mischievous winged son aimed at her and missed, but his arrow shot through the roses. The roses grew thorns thanks to Eros's arrow. Aphrodite pricked her finger on a rose thorn and her blood turned the roses red. It’s an interesting story that might be the reason why people started considering roses to be romantic.

In Roman Mythology Roses were known to be a symbol of desire and secrecy. Romans would reportedly put roses in their bedrooms to represent the love and beauty that Venus was known for. Roman emperors were also known for filling their bathtubs with rose petals and using them as confetti for celebrations. Their pleasant-smelling fragrance graced many Romans’ reception rooms and their presence in romantic rendezvous continued adding to roses being associated with love and desire.

FFF377 - VALENTINE ROSES

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Roses have traditionally been associated with love and romance. The symbolism varies depending on the colour of the rose and how many roses are given.
  • Red roses symbolise love and romance;
  • Pink roses symbolise gratitude, grace, admiration, and joy;
  • Orange roses symbolise enthusiasm and passion;
  • Yellow roses symbolise friendship;
  • White roses symbolise innocence and purity;
  • Lilac/blue roses symbolise the ideal;
  • Deep red/Black roses symbolise passion and lust.

Though in most cases, roses are tied to love, you can send a specific romantic message by the number of roses you send.
  • One rose symbolises love at first sight;
  • Two roses symbolise shared and deep love;
  • Three roses say “I love you”;
  • Six roses say “I want to be yours”;
  • Seven roses say “I’m infatuated with you”;
  • Nine roses symbolise eternal love;
  • Ten roses say “You’re perfect”;
  • Twelve roses say “You are precious to me”;
  • 50 roses say “My love knows no bounds”.
